3 Ways to Enjoy Summer with a Full Time Job!

Summer is just around the corner and boy is summer different as an adult! The first year I had a summer internship in college, I was shocked. I was living in New York City, working in a studio (photography) all day and wishing I was outside by the beach or in the mountains. Fast forward to the next year in college (junior year), I was working outside everyday and had my idea of summers back.

Fast forward to today, 3 years out of college, full time job and freelancing 25 hours a week, summers fly by! The last two years I have decided to put myself first and find fun ways to enjoy summer even with a full time job. To my surprise, these small steps forward have me excited to summer every year regardless of the time of day I spend working.

In an article I wrote for Health-Ade last year, I talk about the importance of a morning routine. I am very much a routine kind of gal! Though in summer, I allow the wind to blow through my soul and guide my life after work. With the Mountains, rivers and hikes of the Rockies at my fingertips, I find that my happiness, passion and drive soar when I allow myself to enjoy the summer.

There are 3 main go-tos that refuel my soul come summer time that are easy to fit into your schedule with a full time job. First, I love to go to an early morning or evening hike. Secondly, some quality time in my hammock, with a book, bottle of my favorite summer kombucha, Jalapeno-Kiwi-Cucumber and the sound of tall grass blowing in the wind. And last but definitely not least, really there are endless possibilities, I love reflection time with my dog and husband by the river. Watching the water flow by, the fish pop up and the freedom the river shows.

Let’s talk hiking! The amazing thing about this activity is that you don’t need a class pass, to sign in on line to go get exercise or even an excuse to not get outside. Grab a friend, some water, a doggo if you have one and get up before your work day to get some movement in. If you are like many people I know, and work starts literally at the crack of dawn, allow yourself to have the movement and moment after a crazy day on the job. Don’t have access to a hiking trail? Get outside and walk! Movement, sun and heat are key components of a summer. Allow yourself to be present with your walking partners, yourself and nature to soak in the summer vibes! Don’t forget to pack a bottle of your favorite summer kombucha for a mid trail snack!

I have a deep love affair with my hammock. I can easily say, this was the best purchase I have ever made in my adult life. There is something so relaxing about being suspended, weightless and wrapped in a cacoon of summer. After work gets out, my favorite thing to do is grab my book of choice at the time, my Health-Ade Jalapeno-Kiwi-Cucumber, my dog, and my hammock. I string my hammock between two sturdy trees, house posts or really anything jump in with my puppy, book and booch! If you can sense a common theme here, I love my dog and she has the same love affair with my hammock! Thank goodness she is only 9lbs!

Get outside! Connect with nature in a way allows you to be grounded to the earth. That might sound silly to some city folks but, I love watching rivers flow, sitting on rocks or the bank and watching life take place right in front of me. Something so serene, so raw and so uninterrupted. Again, if you are living some place not close to natural water features, grab a towel, and go lay down on the ground in a yard or a park. This way of enjoying summer is enjoying the slow pace of summer. The time when everyone seems to be taking an extra beat before they speak, a slower meal and a nighttime walk. Be present in your intentions and actions. Become one with your surroundings and shut off your phone, because it will be there when you are done having a moment to yourself!
