Sweet and Savory Grilled Cheese

Growing up, I loved a great greasy grilled cheese! I recently was inspired by the great Food Network show Chopped, to jazz up the common grilled cheese! As huckleberries are coming into season here in Montana I felt like it was the perfect addition to the classic savory grilled cheese. 

As many of you know, I've been very obsessed with baking pretzels lately. I mean totally obsessed! I think they are fun and flavorful, so I made a pretzel bun as a warrior to hold the cheesy deliciousness!

Pretzel Roll: Preheat the oven to 425°

In a food processor, combine the flour, salt, sugar and the yeast

Pulse in the warm water until a ball of dough forms

Place the dough in a warm location for 30 minutes to rise

Once the dough rises, place the ball of dough on a cutting board with oil lightly coating the surface

In a bowl, combine your boiling water and the baking soda and set aside

Taking your dough, roll into about 3" balls and set in the baking soda for 1 minute

Transfer all the balls of dough from the baking soda bath to the parchment lined baking pans 

Using a sharp knife, score the top of the balls in an X formation

Place in the oven for 12-15 minutes until golden brown

- 2 1/2 cups of all purpose flour

- 1 teaspoon of salt

- 1 teaspoon of sugar

- 2 packs of active yeast

- 1 cup of warm water


- 1 cup of boiling water

- 1 tablespoon of baking soda

- 3 tablespoons of melted butter

- sprinkle of salt for each pretzel

Cheese and Huckleberry:

- 1 cup of grated pepper jack cheese

- 1 cup of grated sharp cheddar cheese

- 1 cup of huckleberry jam


Once the rolls are golden brown, taking a brush, brush the top of the rolls with the melted butter and sprinkle with salt

Next, take your rolls and slice down the middle to create two slices of rolls

Using a knife or a spatula, spread your huckleberry jam (really add a lot!) to the top and bottom of the rolls on the inside

Taking about 1/4" cup of each cheese, place on the roll and then place the top back on and place on a heated skillet for about 5 minutes for the cheese to melt!

Eat and enjoy!
